FM Environmental bags £750,000 equipment deal with grocery giant Walmart
FM Environmental, based on Greenbank Industrial Estate, specialises in grease removal and water treatment systems.
Now it will supply its Grease Guardian fat removal equipment to Asda parent company Walmart, which will use it in around 200 of its in-store restaurants in Mexico.
FM Environmental, founded 35 years ago, got the help of Invest NI in its global marketing, and also took part in its international visit programme.
It already exports to over 30 markets, including the US, Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland, France and Russia, and runs a manufacturing plant in Malta.
Company marketing director Eamon Fitzpatrick said: "Winning this business from such a prestigious customer as Walmart is tremendously encouraging and will be of enormous benefit to us as we seek to grow our business in North America, now a key target market for us.
"It’s a market with huge potential for our Grease Guardian equipment because of the scale of the fast food business, particularly in the US. We are focusing significant resources there to develop opportunities that we have already identified."
He said that focusing on international markets had helped it achieve 20% growth every year over the past few years.
"Invest Northern Ireland’s encouragement and practical support, particularly through the international visit programme, have been immensely important and has enabled us to position the business for further growth in the US, Europe and the Middle East."
Invest NI trade director Dr Vicky Kell said the Mexico deal was "extremely important" for the company, and praised its commitment to growing in external markets.
"The company has developed a structured approach to its international business involving extensive market research to pinpoint opportunities. Its success is also based on fast response to initial leads supported by excellent customer service. This responsive engagement is a key requirement for successful exporting and is something many companies neglect."
FM Environmental also announced it had won the mechanical and electrical subcontract to supply and install three surface water pumping stations at Guernsey airport and its runways.

FM resolves NI Water septicity problems with OXY-FLO package
The compact, PLC-controlled system will dose calcium nitrate into a 67 l/s sewage pump station that feeds into a 9-mile pumping main. Designed to be fully automated, the OXY-FLO is a smart-control dosing system that anticipates septic conditions thereby preventing noxious odours and material corrosion.
Septicity occurs when dissolved oxygen is consumed thereby creating anaerobic conditions resulting in the bacteria forming hydrogen sulphide. Hydrogen sulphide not only contributes to noxious odours at manholes and chambers but also contributes to corrosion in concrete and metal sewer pipes and pumping stations through the formation of sulphuric acid, leading to costly repairs and even emergency reconstruction as a result of collapsing mains.
Hot weather conditions, such as were experienced this summer, further contributes to the septicity problem with noxious odours at sewage works and pumping stations causing a public nuisance to holiday-makers and seaside day-trippers across the country.
The OXY-FLO system has been designed as a one-stop solution for solving septicity problems either on new or existing installations. The OXY-FLO system is set up at the factory providing a plug-and-play solution when it arrives on site. The intuitive touch-screen interface will then allow fine-tuning once installed on site with historical data logging of events and alarm notifications contributing to the refinement process.
The OXY-FLO system uses triple compensation to ensure dosing is carried out effectively and efficiently. By measuring temperature, H2S levels and pumped flow, OXY-FLO adapts its output to dose the perfect amount of chemical required for the specific and changing site conditions.
The OXY-FLO system comes as a compact package including intelligent duty-standby dosing pumps, a powerful PLC controller, Hi-Resolution HMI touch screen interface, external alarm indication, safety shower/eye-wash facility and temperature and H2S sensing probes. The entire system is neatly packaged in an innovative GRP kiosk with its own retractable weather-resistant roof and doors, making the OXY-FLO an indispensable piece of innovation for Water Utilities in their fight against septicity. Chemical storage tanks and bunds can be included as additional options with on-site commissioning and training available on request.
The net benefits of the OXY-FLO installation are
-
improved neighbor relations
- ongoing improvement in regulatory relationships that "bad smells" can erode
- A controlled low dose rate, therefore a control on the costs of chemical consumption to deliver the appropriat

The project will involve the installation of Xylem wetwell pumps rated upto 48 kW, in 2 and 3 pump installations. FM Environmental will also provide the telemetry, PLC programming and Form 4 panels, penstocks.
With anticipated pump flow rates of upto 1,095 litres/second from the Francis Street pump station, the residents of the area can be reassured that their safety and protection of their property will benefit from the large infrastructure investment and the pumping expertise of FM Environmental.
