FM resolves NI Water septicity problems with OXY-FLO package
The compact, PLC-controlled system will dose calcium nitrate into a 67 l/s sewage pump station that feeds into a 9-mile pumping main. Designed to be fully automated, the OXY-FLO is a smart-control dosing system that anticipates septic conditions thereby preventing noxious odours and material corrosion.
Septicity occurs when dissolved oxygen is consumed thereby creating anaerobic conditions resulting in the bacteria forming hydrogen sulphide. Hydrogen sulphide not only contributes to noxious odours at manholes and chambers but also contributes to corrosion in concrete and metal sewer pipes and pumping stations through the formation of sulphuric acid, leading to costly repairs and even emergency reconstruction as a result of collapsing mains.
Hot weather conditions, such as were experienced this summer, further contributes to the septicity problem with noxious odours at sewage works and pumping stations causing a public nuisance to holiday-makers and seaside day-trippers across the country.
The OXY-FLO system has been designed as a one-stop solution for solving septicity problems either on new or existing installations. The OXY-FLO system is set up at the factory providing a plug-and-play solution when it arrives on site. The intuitive touch-screen interface will then allow fine-tuning once installed on site with historical data logging of events and alarm notifications contributing to the refinement process.
The OXY-FLO system uses triple compensation to ensure dosing is carried out effectively and efficiently. By measuring temperature, H2S levels and pumped flow, OXY-FLO adapts its output to dose the perfect amount of chemical required for the specific and changing site conditions.
The OXY-FLO system comes as a compact package including intelligent duty-standby dosing pumps, a powerful PLC controller, Hi-Resolution HMI touch screen interface, external alarm indication, safety shower/eye-wash facility and temperature and H2S sensing probes. The entire system is neatly packaged in an innovative GRP kiosk with its own retractable weather-resistant roof and doors, making the OXY-FLO an indispensable piece of innovation for Water Utilities in their fight against septicity. Chemical storage tanks and bunds can be included as additional options with on-site commissioning and training available on request.
The net benefits of the OXY-FLO installation are
-
improved neighbor relations
- ongoing improvement in regulatory relationships that "bad smells" can erode
- A controlled low dose rate, therefore a control on the costs of chemical consumption to deliver the appropriat

Flood prevention bundle awarded
Following completion of the Fermoy Phase 1 & Mallow Flood Alleviation pumping station bundles, and currently on site with the Fermoy Phase 2 bundle, we are delighted to announce the award of the River Fergus Lower (Ennis) flood alleviation contract.
After competitive tender, the Main Contractor, Wills Bros of Foxford, Co. Mayo, recently appointed FM Environmental as the principal MEICA contractor for the design, supply, install and commission of the pumping station element of the scheme.
Having suffered terrible flood damage in november 2009, the installation of pumping stations at the Courthouse, Castlelawn and Francis Street locations will be central to the flood prevention strategy of the Irish town of Ennis.
The project will involve the installation of Xylem wetwell pumps rated upto 48 kW, in 2 and 3 pump installations. FM Environmental will also provide the telemetry, PLC programming and Form 4 panels, penstocks.
With anticipated pump flow rates of upto 1,095 litres/second from the Francis Street pump station, the residents of the area can be reassured that their safety and protection of their property will benefit from the large infrastructure investment and the pumping expertise of FM Environmental.
We are deeply honoured to be associated with such an important project, that will benefit the region for many years to come, and stands as recognition of FM Environmentals dedication to fine workmanship, timely delivery and cost efficiency.

Health & Safety Excellence achieved
FM Environmental is proud to be able to claim 2012 as a year free of Reportable Accidents, as defined by the HSE and according to RIDDOR.
Considering that FM Environmental staff operate and install in a number of hazardous working conditions, such as in confined spaces, contact with electricity and water (not simultaneously of course), building site, working at heights, and operating in locations at risk of Weils Disease, this is no small achievement.
We will continue to build on this success to maintain our faultless performance, guarding against complacency.
We will continue to apply sound Health and Safety practices in our everyday working lives. In particular the use and application of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) are standard on contracts which form part of our OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management System, as well as our ISO9001 Quality System, we are obliged to provide RAMS on all contracts we work on.
Furthermore, Some of our clients such as Northern Ireland Water, operate using the ‘Take 2’ approach to Risk Assessments i.e. when returning to a site a second or third time, a further assessment on potential risks or hazards is made as site conditions can often change from one day to the next. This seems a logical and practical approach to Risk Assessments and the Company is to apply the same approach to ALL our contracts. RAMS will be modified to include a ‘Take 2’ section which engineers are to note and complete.
We look forward to continuing Best Practice for the safety of both FM Environmental staff as well as other persons that may be on site.
